Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning of the elderly women¡¯s sexual life that had not been expressed due to the Confucian cultures to develop an instrument on the elderly¡¯s sexuality in Korea.

Method: The study selected 6 married elderly women older than 60 years old who used a welfare center for the elderly in Seoul and promoted the focus group interview and individual in depth interview. The collected qualitative data was analyzed based on the 6-stage analysis method of Colaizzi in the phenomenological methods.

Results: Four themes were derived as ¡®sex without I¡¯, ¡®memory of unimpressive sex¡¯, ¡®Here in body, but not in spirit¡¯, ¡®Fading sex¡¯. The women faced chronic sexless situation while receiving instrumental sex that reacted to the sexual desire of their spouses. Also, they internalized sexual control and suppression over women by the patriarchal system. They accepted the closure of sex as the biological flow while regretting their ignorant and undeveloped sexual lives.
Conclusion: It is necessary to improve the social awareness on the self-oriented sexual entertainment among the elderly while providing information and education that can help the sexual lives of the elderly.
